Volunteer group and community advocate to be recognised with civic awards

A long-time community advocate and a group that has provided many ‘helping hands’ to Wellington community projects will be recognised with Absolutely Positively Wellingtonian Awards next week.

Stan Andis and the Mormon Helping Hands Wellington Stake will be presented with their Absolutely Positively Wellingtonian Awards (APWs) at the beginning of next Wednesday’s Wellington City Council meeting at 5.30pm on 19 August.

Stan Andis has been an active community advocate in Wellington’s Eastern Suburbs for over 30 years, serving multiple community groups and associations. He is currently the president of the Strathmore Park Progressive Association and a Coach at Miramar Golf Club.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says, “For many years Stan has spoken up for the residents of Wellington’s Eastern suburbs and his advocacy on behalf of others is admirable.”

The Mormon Helping Hands Wellington group have tirelessly contributed their time and services to the Wellington Community.

Since 2008 the group have coordinated huge yearly working bees that have been attended by over 1500 people, contributing over 5500 volunteer hours. Clean-ups for Karori Stream, Owhiro Stream and Karori Cemetery are among the many projects which have benefitted from the group’s time.

Wellington charitable organisations have also benefited from the generosity of the Mormon Helping Hands group, including Women’s Refuge and the Night Shelter.

Mayor Wade-Brown says, “The Wellington Mormon Helping Hands regularly contribute to our work programme every year with their hard work and positive, have-a-go attitudes. The group have pitched in on huge scale projects and they’ve always done it with aplomb and enthusiasm.”

APWs are a way for Council to honour members of the community who have made outstanding or lengthy contributions to the capital and its people.

The presentation of the awards will take place at the beginning of the full Council meeting on August 19, due to begin at 5.30pm at Council’s Committee Room 1, 101 Wakefield Street.
