Nelsonians urged to sign The Pledge for White Ribbon month
Nelson Mayor urges Nelsonians to sign The Pledge for
White Ribbon month
11 November 2015
Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese is urging
Nelsonians to get behind White Ribbon month – a campaign
running throughout November encouraging New Zealanders to
take a stand against violence towards women.
Mayor Reese, who has shown her ongoing support for the anti-violence White Ribbon Pledge movement by signing The Pledge in 2013, and again this year, is now encouraging others to do the same.
“I’m proud to re-affirm my commitment to ending violence,” says Mayor Reese.
“Violence against women, or any person, is unacceptable. We need to do all we can to ensure Nelsonians get behind this message, so I encourage everyone to go online and take The Pledge and to set an example to their community.”
The online White Ribbon Pledge asks men to never ‘commit, condone or remain silent’ about violence towards women.
Those taking The Pledge are provided with resources to help them change violent or abusive attitudes and behaviour. The Pledge supports men in their commitment to making New Zealand a violence-free country.
The Pledge can be taken online at www.whiteribbon.org.nz.
As part of White Ribbon month, a week-long motorcycle tour is taking place throughout the country, and is a powerful and inspirational voyage for all involved. The South Island leg of the White Ribbon Ride starts in Nelson on 17 November, departing from Zumo cafe on Rutherford Street at 8am.
White Ribbon Day is held on 25 November, and is the international day when people wear a white ribbon to show that they do not condone violence towards women.
