Glenda Drive Chemical Incident Update

Glenda Drive Chemical Incident Update

Monitoring equipment is being sourced and will be brought to the scene of a chemical incident at a commercial laundry in Glenda Drive, Frankton to assist the Fire Service in confirming chlorine gas levels in the building.

Deputy Chief Fire Officer Andrew Bary from Queenstown said that a command vehicle and additional appliance from Invercargill had arrived at the scene, and a 300m cordon was being maintained.

Fire, Police and St John responded to the incident in the industrial area this morning, and remain at the scene.

Police Senior Sergeant John Fookes of the Queenstown Police said that there was no access to the southern end of Glenda Drive but the Police were working to establish an exit route for people working in the area, who were outside the cordon but unable to leave via the usual route.

There is restricted access to the northern end of Glenda Drive.

St John says that one man was taken to Lakes District Hospital as a precaution, after two chemicals were inadvertently mixed at the laundry.

Updates on any changes to the cordon and traffic will be posted on the Queenstown Lakes District Council website www.qldc.govt.nz, on Twitter @QueenstownLakes and QLDC Facebook page, as well as on local radio stations More FM and The Hits
