Hundreds attending 24th annual New Zealand parking conference in New Plymouth this week


Hundreds of parking officers and local body experts are attending the 24th annual New Zealand parking conference in New Plymouth this week.

NZ Parking Association chairman Colin Waite said New Zealand parking officers wanted to work closer with CCS, justice, land transport, police and local councils.

``We will also learn a lot how they do things in the United states. Our key speaker is Kim Jackson, chief executive of the International Parking Institute in Washington DC.’’

Jackson will talk about the benefits of training, improved customer service and public relations, fewer complaints, better moral and attitude and absenteeism.

Others speakers include Tom Mulholland is international best selling author and doctor at Auckland Hospital’s emergency department and comedian, magician, hypnotist and motivational speaker Dave Upfold will talk about stress in the workplace.

Parking is a major issue in New Zealand's cities and more than a million parking fines are issued in New Zealand every year.

Delegates representing more than 50 local authorities, airport companies and major car park operators are attending the four-day conference.

Car-parking rates as one of the issues of the 21st century and Waite said the problem was not confined to big cities as it regularly reared its head in smaller towns, with local councils debating over inconsiderate drivers parking illegally for hours in restricted areas.

The conference is the shop window for local authorities, car park operators, manufacturers and suppliers activities.

The annual awards for parking excellence will be presented during the conference. The awards recognise contributions to the industry as well as acknowledging struggles that some parking wardens have in their cities.
