Telecom price plans underwhelm
2degrees CEO Mike Reynolds: “Telecom price plans underwhelm”
AUCKLAND, 28 May 2009 - Mike Reynolds, the CEO of New Zealand’s third mobile phone network, 2degrees, is underwhelmed by the pricing plans unveiled by Telecom today for their new XT network.
“If I was a consumer I’d be asking: is that it….?” he said.
“The rates don’t look too dissimilar to what is currently being offered by Vodafone New Zealand, but they look very expensive to comparable plans offered overseas.
“In the United States, for US $49.99 per month you get totally unlimited calling on Virgin’s nationwide 3G network to any network. In New Zealand by comparison, in the absence of any unlimited calling plans, the top Telecom One Rate plan includes 2500 minutes at NZ$800 per month!
“The question is, how does that equate to value for the consumer?
“Now is not the time to sign up to two or three year contracts. Soon we will be unveiling the 2degrees price plans as we countdown to our launch in August. I urge New Zealanders to hold off till then, when they can make a fully informed decision,” said Mike Reynolds.
