Burgerfuel Wins Award For Eco-Licious Chip Cup Design

BurgerFuel claimed a victory at the Environmental Packaging awards. On the 6th of September 2009 The Packaging Council awarded the BurgerFuel ‘Eco-licious’ chip cup the Foodstuffs Packaging Design Award for its innovative combination of environmental consideration and design qualities. The judges praised BurgerFuel’s leadership and ingenuity in conceiving and executing this award winning design as a “great initiative from a contemporary food outlet”.

When entering the fast-food market BurgerFuel knew its environmental conscience would not be silenced by the easy, cheap packaging options employed by the fast-food industry. So the environmentally mindful BurgerFuel began the crusade to find a 100% recycled, recyclable and biodegradable packaging solution and it would begin with the chip cup. Crazy ideas were thrown back and forth and various companies were sought to step up to the challenge. In 2008 Paul Cusdin (BurgerFuel’s Research and Development go to guy) brought on board another local New Zealand company, Pakworld. Together they took on this ambitious project to design and produce a chip cup that would further improve the environmental position of the company.

After an exhaustive trial process, the award winning BurgerFuel ‘Eco-licious’ chip cup was born. The design was almost grounded from the get go as the traditional method to make recycled packaging food safe was to coat it in a wax solution, however this makes it non-biodegradable. The print process utilises sustainable vegetable oil based inks with a water based coating instead of a wax coating with zero production emissions making this packaging food safe as well as 100% recyclable and biodegradable. Secondary processes are employed to further reduce the environmental impact including the cups being supplied flat packed in recycled outer packaging. As well as their environmentally friendly quality the chip cups are also adorned with the unique BurgerFuel personality including a variety of different anecdotes about the trials and tribulations of the Kiwi brand, such as the one below on the decision to introduce the new chip cup.

“A lot of tree hugging went into the design of this. After going through a Woodstock load of hippies we finally found some decent, recycled, recyclable, biodegradable packaging. We then did a little survey in store and asked people whether or not they’d only come to us if we were more environmentally friendly than the other guys. The survey results came back with a resounding ‘not really’. Oh well, all the kids at BurgerFuel grew up wanting to be Planeteers so we decided to combine all our powers (especially heart) and save the planet anyway”.

True to BurgerFuel’s independent nature they ignored the ‘customer is always right’ rule of thumb and went ahead with the eco-friendly chip cups anyway, proving sometimes you just need to stand up for what you believe in.

The ‘Eco-licious’ chip cup is printed in five colours with the unique and irreverent branding that BurgerFuel is known for. There are now four different products in this packaging range, including the notorious Doofer (burger holder) innovation.

BurgerFuel has continued to stay at the forefront of brand design whilst staying true to its eco-morals. BurgerFuel’s commitment to the environment doesn’t even end there, its OSCO (Old Shitty Chip Oil) programme sees the used oil from its stores turned into bio-diesel to fuel its delivery vehicle, making the full experience of eating chips at BurgerFuel truly Eco-licious! The BurgerFuel Eco-licious chip cups are

• 100 % recycled, recyclable and biodegradable
• Printed using vegetable oil based inks from a sustainable, renewable resource.

• Part of BurgerFuel’s OSCO (Old Shitty Chip Cup Oil) programme which turns the used oil from the stores into Bio-Diesel • Designed and produced in New Zealand • Coated with a non-wax fully biodegradable coating Further information:
