Symantec Protects Against Unique Scams, Phishing

Symantec Protects Against Unique Scams and Phishing Attacks With
Symantec Brightmail Gateway 9.0

Newest versions tackle inbound and outbound messaging security for enterprises and small businesses, with improved real-time threat protection, and a hosted email encryption service

Symantec Corp (Nasdaq; SYMC) today announced its latest messaging security platforms, Symantec Brightmail Gateway 9.0 and Symantec Brightmail Gateway 9.0 Small Business Edition. The new versions will deliver enhanced protection through real-time updates, provide greater control through integrated email encryption and offer increased scalability to meet the needs of both enterprises and small businesses. Symantec Brightmail Gateway 9.0 and Symantec Brightmail Gateway 9.0 Small Business Edition are scheduled to be available in the Northern Hemisphere Spring 2010.

Symantec Brightmail Gateway 9.0, which will also be a part of the Symantec Protection Suite Enterprise Edition, will introduce an advanced machine learning module that leverages fuzzy intelligence to identify unique and targeted scams and phishing attacks, and protect against these low volume, yet high-cost threats.

“While many solutions claim to block more than 95 percent of spam, the targeted spam that does get through can do significant damage due to advanced social engineering and criminal motivations behind these attacks,” said Jack Quinnell, director, product management, Symantec. “The planned release of Symantec Brightmail Gateway 9.0 staves off these targeted attacks, blocking more than 99 percent of spam while helping protect sensitive information and streamlining management of mission-critical email security.”

Easy-to-use and Uncompromising Protection for Small Businesses
A recent survey conducted by Symantec showed that 42 percent of small and midsized businesses (SMBs) do not have effective email protection, and they become easy targets for cyber criminals to attack for financial gain. Symantec Brightmail Gateway 9.0 Small Business Edition, tailored for businesses with fewer than 250 users, may be installed within 15 minutes and provides the same enterprise class protection against viruses, spam, phishing, botnets and spyware, and is very affordable with small-business-friendly licensing.

“The accuracy of Symantec Brightmail Gateway Small Business Edition is unbelievable. We’re blocking around 25,000 spam messages a day, and we haven’t had one false positive,” said Sean Adams, manager in charge of IT, Bertelkamp Automation. “And, with the outbound message filtering, I finally have control over the content that leaves our organisation – from now on email around here is going to be like Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood – safe and harmless.”

Brightmail Gateway 9.0 Small Business Edition, which will be available as both a physical appliance and a VMware-based virtual appliance, will offer ease of use with no requirements for manually tuning rulesets or maintaining allow and block lists to achieve effective and accurate antispam protection.

Improved Defences with Adaptive Real-time Protection
Symantec has observed that the greatest volume of new spam attacks takes place within the first few minutes of their emergence. To effectively combat this, Symantec Brightmail Gateway 9.0 is expected to provide real-time protection with antispam rule updates occurring as frequently as every second. These updates will leverage the depth and breadth of the Symantec Global Intelligence Network, which includes more than 120 million antivirus sensors, 40,000 firewall and intrusion detection sensors and feedback gleaned from more than 800 million mailboxes protected by Symantec.

Customers have a powerful new way to leverage the Symantec Global Intelligence Network with Symantec’s planned release of Brightmail Gateway 9.0 by contributing automated data feeds directly to the patented Symantec Probe Network, which has five million decoy email accounts focused on collecting fraud, phishing and spam samples. By contributing to the Probe Network, customers may benefit from improved antispam effectiveness tailored to the email attacks seen in their environments.

Enhanced Content Filtering and Data Loss Prevention with Encryption
A new premium add-on service to Symantec Brightmail Gateway 9.0, Symantec Content Encryption is scheduled to be integrated with Brightmail Gateway’s powerful advanced content filtering and data loss prevention policies and workflow with a flexible and cost-effective hosted encryption service backed by Symantec Hosted Services. This hybrid architecture may allow customers to securely communicate with customers and business partners by encrypting sensitive outbound email without managing any additional infrastructure in-house.

Increased Scalability
Symantec Brightmail Gateway 9.0 is expected to deliver new LDAP integration and Spam Quarantine architectures that provide customers with improved performance and scalability. The new LDAP integration architecture will scale support for recipient validation, authentication, address resolution and email routing based on a company’s LDAP infrastructure to very large enterprise deployments.
