World’s eyes on New Zealand tourism – TRENZ 2010

The eyes of the world will be on New Zealand next month when more than 270 travel and tourism Buyers descend on Auckland for TRENZ 2010, one of the country’s biggest international business events.

On in Auckland 24-27 May, TRENZ (Tourism Rendezvous New Zealand) is a showcase for New Zealand’s tourism industry, a major generator of foreign exchange, pumping $25 million into the economy every day.

“TRENZ 2010 will bring together over 270 international Buyers from New Zealand’s major and emerging visitor markets with 250 of New Zealand’s leading tourism operators,” explains Tourism Industry Association Chief Executive Tim Cossar.

He says collectively the Buyers represent up to 75% of international tourism business to New Zealand. They come to TRENZ to purchase accommodation, transport, and activities to include in brochures, websites and itineraries for the coming seasons.

“We are very excited about the prospects for this year’s event as the world emerges from recession and consumers become more confident.”

Buyer numbers are up on last year’s TRENZ, with good representation from our major visitor markets, including Australia, China, USA and UK, and also emerging and new markets such as South America and Eastern Europe. There is also a big jump in Buyers from India, reflecting the growing interest in travel to New Zealand from this market.”

“With just over one year to go to kick-off, TRENZ will also be the last chance to book product for Rugby World Cup 2011, which is expected to attract an additional 85,000 international visitors to New Zealand.”

TRENZ is managed by TIA in partnership with Tourism New Zealand, Air New Zealand, Qantas, Tourism Auckland and other industry supporters.

“It is a critical event on the annual tourism industry calendar,” says Mr Cossar, “four days of focused business activity, where relationships are forged and deals negotiated.”

Sixty international and domestic media will also attend this year’s event, generating print, TV and online coverage for Destination New Zealand around the world.

Mr Cossar says the 250 tourism operators exhibiting at TRENZ 2010 represent a diverse range of products – everything from adventure operators, to airlines, accommodation and Maori heritage. Almost 60 new products will be on show this year, ranging from guided mountain biking and a boutique hotel to shark cage diving and a golf academy.

“Competition for the international visitor dollar has never been tougher and TRENZ helps keep New Zealand on the radar as an exciting, quality destination offering a wide variety of outstanding visitor experiences.”
