Chamber Welcomes Government’s Investment in Science
The Wellington Regional Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the Prime Minister’s announcement of increased science funding, made at a chamber function this morning.
“Innovative science is crucial to increasing productivity and economic growth. We are pleased that the government’s proposals announced today recognise this,” said Chamber Chief Executive Charles Finny.
“Science is particularly important for the Wellington economy with a large contingent of Crown Research Institutes, Universities, and technology oriented businesses located here.
“The commercialisation of this science is where much of Wellington’s and New Zealand’s economic future will lie.
“Likewise it is essential that universities, CRIs and businesses collaborate as effectively as possible. We like the fact that some of the programmes announced today specifically encourage such collaboration.
“We will scrutinise the package but it looks as if the new science funding is directed to where it is likely to add the most value which is important.
“We congratulate Prime Minister Key and Minister of Research, Science and Technology Dr Wayne Mapp for their work in this regard,” Mr Finny concluded.
