Petroleum Conference Draws Speakers
One of the 2010 NZ Petroleum Conference’s keynote speakers, William Buechler, made headlines last year when he described New Zealand as a country at the same stage as Norway before the emergence of the North Sea oil boom.
Hosted by Crown Minerals and to be held at Auckland’s SKYCITY Convention Centre from September 19-22, the 2010 New Zealand Petroleum Conference is the country’s premier event for the oil exploration and production industry. This year’s conference theme is Transformation; focusing on the role the oil industry could play in transforming New Zealand’s economy and how we can ensure that the country continues to be a highly attractive global destination for petroleum investment
Buechler told Fairfax
NZ’s former The Independent newspaper that New Zealand was
at the same stage as Norway during the pre-North Sea oil
boom era.
"New Zealand is at the beginning of a
country-changing event; the challenge is going to be to
embrace the change and get it right,” he told The
Independent.
Buechler, who has more than 30 years
experience as an investment consultant, is a certified
investment management analyst, receiving his qualification
from the Wharton School of Business at The University of
Pennsylvania.
After establishing Buechler Capital Asset Management, Buechler launched the Kiwi-Pacific Fund to invest in Australasia and the South Pacific region including New Zealand, Australia and Singapore. Buechler Capital also manages substantial assets invested in the United States.
He has also said that NZ should look at the example of Norway as a country that treated oil proceeds and royalties as investment capital “and not revenue like Britain”. Norway's Petroleum Fund, now renamed the Pension Fund, topped US$443 billion in March 31, 2010 making it one of the top three institutional funds of its type in the world.
Buechler is well-known in the North American
business world as a media commentator and frequent
contributor on both the CNBC and Bloomberg television
networks, and is now familiar to the petroleum and energy
circles in NZ through presentations and conferences and
seminars in the past three years.
His 2010 NZ Petroleum
Conference keynote speech will cover investment
opportunities in NZ and the Asia Pacific region.
Specifically he will touch on:
• New Zealand and
Asia Pacific are at the beginning of region changing events
– activity and momentum is increasing faster than anyone
suspects.
• New Zealand’s masterstroke of
marketing – the seismic acquisition programme.
•
The investment ramifications of Zealandia – the eight
continent?
• Environmental safety – the
deepwater drilling ‘fleet of the future’ and its
investment opportunities.
• New Zealand’s
future – a tale of two countries.
