Sir Archie Taiaroa will be missed as one of the most significant statesmen of both Maoridom and the seafood industry, said New Zealand Seafood Industry Council chairman Dave Sharp.
“Sir Archie was widely respected as a man of integrity, diplomacy and intelligence. He was always a gentleman in every sense of the word,” Mr Sharp said today.
Sir Archie was appointed by former Prime Minister Rt Hon Jim Bolger and Sir Doug Kidd, Minister of Fisheries and Maori Affairs, to the board of the Treaty of Waitangi Fisheries Commission in 1993. A position he held until he passed away yesterday. He served as Deputy Chairman from 2000 and was Chairman from 2006 to 2009.
“Sir Archie was significant in his contribution to the fisheries settlements under the Treaty of Waitangi. A leader, a mentor and on many occasions the calming influence in discussion and negotiation. He will be missed.”
Mr Sharp said that the New Zealand seafood industry’s sympathy was with Sir Archie’s widow, Lady Martha, and family.
“A fine man, I hope his family will be comforted by the memory of this inspirational and dignified gentleman.”
