Toyota celebrates two million Prius sales

Sales of the world’s first mass-produced petrol-electric hybrid vehicle, the Toyota Prius, have hit two million – a significant milestone in the global transition to low emission motoring.

Toyota estimates this has resulted in 11 million tonnes fewer greenhouse gas emissions[1] than would have been caused if all Prius drivers around the world had used petrol-powered vehicles of a similar size instead.

Toyota New Zealand is proud to have contributed sales of 1948 Prius since the revolutionary vehicle was introduced to the market here in 2003, says the company’s General Manager of Sales and Operations, Steve Prangnell.

“The Prius is probably the most recognisable face of Toyota’s global commitment to leading the development of hybrid technology. It appeals to New Zealand drivers who are serious about reducing their impact on the environment,” said Steve Prangnell.

At the end of September, 13 years after it was first released to acclaim in Japan, Toyota had sold 2,012,000 Prius worldwide. The Prius, which is now into its third generation model (released in 2009) is sold in more than 70 countries.

Steve Prangnell says the Prius paved the way for hybrid technology to be rolled out into other vehicles, such as the Camry and several Lexus models.

“The Prius has also featured other cutting-edge technologies. The third generation model has a solar roof; the kind of technology only dreamed of just a few years ago.”

Steve Prangnell says last month’s launch of a global trial of 600 Plug-in Prius – including three in New Zealand – which have a different battery system and can operate as electric only up to the open road speed limit and for about 25km, marks the start of another chapter in the Prius success story.

“Toyota expects these vehicles to be released to the market in 2012. They can be plugged into every home’s mains power, and give incredible driving economy with very low emissions. The Prius continues to literally be the future of motoring.”

The Prius is currently defending its proud record in the Energywise Rally. Toyota New Zealand has entered two third generation Prius – one driven by motorsport legend Chris Amon.
