Exclusive Bike Dealership Announced

In a nationwide distribution shake up, local adventure sports retailer Outside Sports has secured a deal as the only store stocking top international bike brand ‘Specialized’ in Queenstown, Wanaka and Te Anau.

Specialized is an American bike brand with a global following, with a range that includes road, mountain and downhill bikes, accessories and technical components.

Outside Sports Purchasing Manager Neil Proctor said all bike stores in the Southern Lakes had been vying to get access to Specialized bikes over the past six months.

“We’re definitely celebrating that Specialized has chosen to partner with Outside Sports,” he said.

“It’s a huge compliment and a great reflection on our bike departments' focus and commitment to all aspects of biking in the region,” he said.

As part of the deal, Specialized is the only bike brand that will be stocked at Outside Sports.

“We’ll now stock a much bigger range of Specialized bikes and parts and accessories than we have been able to do in the past, and we’ll be catering for all budgets.

Mr Proctor said cutting out the ‘middle man’, with Specialized international bringing bikes directly into New Zealand, meant prices had dropped by up to 20% on some models.

“It also means they’ve been able to bring in the entire international range, something they haven’t been able to do in the past. It’s all great news for our customers and all bike enthusiasts in the Southern Lakes.”

Mr Proctor described specialized as “at the top of their game”, with its professional teams winning the Tour de France or being named world champions in downhill racing.

“The research and development they do for their pro cycling teams is second to none. What they learn at the top level flows down through the range, right down to kids’ bikes.”

Mr Proctor said cycling was a growth sport nationwide, and locally there were big developments with the 'Round the Mountains' cycle trail, a proliferation of cycling events, and Gondola access to downhill and trail riding on the forested slopes above Queenstown.

“All in all it's going to be a great summer for bikes,” he said. “Now all you have to do is decide which is the right bike for you, get out there and have some fun.”
