Another double success for Mitre Rocks Vineyard in Sydney – for the second year running!

Yet again, both the Pinot Noirs from boutique Central Otago vineyard Mitre Rocks have won Blue-Gold medals at the 2011 Sydney International Wine Competition! This is the second year in a row that both of these Pinots have stood out among 2,000 of the world’s very best wines.

Mitre Rocks Central Otago Pinot Noir 2008 and the vineyard’s Mount Dottrel Central Otago Pinot Noir from the same vintage both achieved the highest award level at the prestigious Sydney competition.

This extends a marvellous run for the family-run vineyard. Their very first wine, Mount Dottrel Central Otago Pinot Noir 2005, started it all by not only winning a Top 100 Blue-Gold medal in the 2008 Sydney competition, but going on to come runner up behind the eventual Pinot Noir trophy winner.

Last year, the 2007 Mount Dottrel Pinot Noir repeated the outstanding achievement of winning Blue-Gold, joined by its stablemate Mitre Rocks Pinot Noir 2007 which also achieved Blue-Gold status. Mitre Rocks Central Otago Pinot Noir 2008 also earned top honours at another major international wine competition, gaining double gold at the 2010 San Francisco International Wine Competition earlier this year.

“The fact that both these wines won Blue-Gold in Sydney again shows that Mitre Rocks Vineyard can consistently produce outstanding Pinot Noir,” says Roy McCallum, who founded the vineyard with his son Simon in 2000.

While new to the world of wine, Roy used his lifelong background in agriculture to select a perfect vineyard site. Then the McCallums enlisted the help of a team of experts, including award winning winemaker Carol Bunn, to make their dream a reality.

“We wanted to make a Kiwi Pinot Noir of substance and charm,” says Roy. “Impressing the international experts in Australia is a most welcome bonus!”

Both Mount Dottrel Pinot Noir 2008 (RRP $34.95) and Mitre Rocks Pinot Noir 2008 (RRP $41.95) are widely available in New Zealand (distributed through Federal Geo) and also internationally.
