ATV sales buck the trend in 2010 motorcycle sales

The Motor Industry Association (MIA) has released motorcycle sales data based on registrations and off road (unregistered) retail sales. The MIA represents the interests of all importers and distributors of major vehicle brands in New Zealand, including cars, heavy vehicles, motorcycles, scooters and ATVs.

Clive Hellyar, Manager of the Motorcycle Group within the MIA said “Total on and off road bike sales are down by 5.4 % on last year reflecting the effect of the current flat economic conditions but ATV sales had increased by 8% despite the productivity and income challenges experienced by some sectors in agriculture.”

Off road products are an important market sector for the industry with total off road sales, including recreational motorcycles, representing 73.2% of the total 2010 market.

Suzuki, Honda and Yamaha continue to be the leading three brands in all sectors.

Mr. Hellyar concluded by saying that the industry’s expectations for 2011 were for more of the same with road bike sales, which had a reduction of 5.6% compared with 2009, remaining flat this year. Moped sales (which includes scooters) have increased threefold in the last ten years but despite a reduction of 8.8% in 2010 in moped registrations the commuter sector may see some growth if petrol prices continue to rise and urban transport choices shift from car commuting to other options including scooters and small to medium sized motorcycles. ends
