International role for Port Nelson CEO

Port Nelson Limited Chief Executive Martin Byrne has been appointed as the New Zealand director on the board of the International Association of Port and Harbours (IAPH).

This appointment was made following the recent IAPH Asia Oceania Regional Forum and meeting in Auckland. Mr Byrne succeeds former Ports of Auckland CEO Jens Madsen in the position.

The IAPH is a global alliance representing around 230 ports in 90 countries Its membership collectively handles around 60% of the worlds sea-borne traffic and almost 80% of global container traffic. It is a non-profit-making and non-governmental organisation with headquarters in Tokyo.

Mr Byrne said he looked forward to fulfilling the role, as the IAPH members worked together on a number of issues facing the maritime industry.

“Initiatives IAPH is working on, such as the World Climate Initiative, are around encouraging ports to promote environmentally sensitive behaviour,” Mr Byrne said, “any part that we can play in that process will be a positive one.”

The board of directors’ responsibilities include consideration of policy matters for the association, the general supervision of the executive committee and the exchange and sharing of the latest information and trends of the world port and maritime industries.

The appointment will be for two years through until mid 2013.
