WIMBLEDON: Novak Djokovic continued his 2011 domination of Rafael Nadal to win Wimbledon. Djokovic was simply too good for the defending champion taking the match 6-4 6-1 1-6 6-3. The win gained the 24 year old Serb his first grass court title.
Djokovic has toppled Nadal in all five of their matches in 2011 and will now become world No.1, the only person to beat Djokovic in 2011 was Roger Federer in the French Open semi-finals.
The 2011 edition of Wimbledon has produced two ne champions as Petra Kvitova beat Maria Sharapova to win the Ladies’ Singles final at Wimbledon. Kvitova beat the former champion 6-3, 6-4 while playing in her first Grand Slam final.
The double act of Bob and Mike Bryan took out the Wimbledon men's doubles title for the second time, a continuation of their recent domination of the men's doubles circuit.
LE TOUR: Philippe Gilbert of Belgium has won the opening stage of the 2011 Tour de France while defending champion Alberto Contador had a terrible start after being caught in a collision near the finish. Current world champion Thor Hushovd took the yellow jersey by winning the second stage, a 23 kilometre time trial.
MOTOGP: Australia’s Casey Stoner started from pole at the Mugello circuit in Italy but it was defending world champion Jorge Lorenzo who finished in front. Lorenzo made his move with six laps to go and claimed just his second win of the season.
The championship race is still wide open and this result cut Stoners lead to just 19 points.
SUPER RUGBY: The Queensland Reds will host the Crusaders in the inaugural Super 15 final. The Reds beat the Auckland Blues 30-13 in front of 45,000 fans at Suncorp Stadium. Queensland wing Rod Davies scored a hat-trick of tries to put the result beyond doubt. However it was the partnership between Queensland’s playmaker pair of Quade Cooper and Will Genia that tore the Blues apart.
Canterbury’s hard-hitting Crusaders beat the Stormers 29-10 in Cape Town, the champion outfit travelled 11,000 kilometres to beat South Africa’s top side. The red and blacks are on the road again in a crusade that has seen them play every match outside of Christchurch.
Meanwhile the Canterbury provincial side retained the Ranfurly Shield 52-8 in a pre-season match against North Otago.
HOCKEY: The New Zealand Women’s hockey team have beaten South Korea 3-2 at the Champions Trophy hockey tournament in Amsterdam. The result earned the Black Sticks a bronze medal, the first ever by a Kiwi side.
BOXING: Ukrainian boxer Vladimir Klitschko is now the undisputed world heavyweight champion. Klitschko beat Great Britain's David Haye to unite the two major world titles. Former WBA champion Haye lost by a unanimous points decision in Germany citing a broken toe as the main reason for defeat.
RUGBY LEAGUE: In a week that promises one of the best State of Origin finals the NRL was full of young talent. Penrith defeated a sorry looking Canterbury Bulldogs outfit 20-6 while Cronulla were impressive in a 26-4 win over a disappointing South Sydney.
The stars of tomorrow were on show as the youngest ever side to play for Brisbane beat the Eels 16-12 at Parramatta Stadium. Newcastle held on for a tough 14-10 win over a depleted St George Illawarra side.
