Seagate Technology applies for hard disk drive business of Samsung Electronics

The Commerce Commission has received an application from Seagate Technology Plc seeking clearance to acquire certain assets of the hard disk drive business of Samsung Electronics Co. Limited. The application relates to a global merger.


Seagate Technology Plc is a global manufacturer and supplier of computer storage devices such as hard disk drives that are used in a wide range of electronic devices.

Samsung Electronics Co. Limited also manufactures a range of hard disk drives and supplies these worldwide.

In considering the application, the Commission’s role is to determine whether the acquisition has the effect of substantially lessening competition in a market.
