Wellington Fashion Designer to Showcase at the Oscars
Wellington Fashion Designer to Showcase at the Oscars
Wellington, February 20, 2012 - Oscar frenzy is almost upon us and the important question of "what to wear?" has been answered for a couple of lucky ladies by Wellington designer Sophie Voon.
Jana Barrett and Jennifer Bloomfield are accompanying their nominee husbands to the Imax Theatre in LA for the Oscars on the 26th of February and will be showcasing Voon's designs as they mix with Hollywood's elite on the red carpet.
Jana's husband Weta Digital's Daniel Barrett (who will be wearing a Merino wool tuxedo) was the Animation Supervisor and Jennifer's husband R. Christopher White was a Visual Effects Supervisor for Rise of the Planet of the Apes. This is the first Academy Award nomination for them both.
With the men wearing tux it was up to the ladies to add something unique to the party and they both decided it was the perfect chance to wear a New Zealand designer in front of a world audience.
"I am thrilled I will be wearing a dress by a Wellington designer to the Oscars. It was extremely important to me right from the start that there is a piece of New Zealand fashion represented among the big fashion names. Although New Zealand is a small country, the fashion here is unique and just as special as anywhere else in the world." says Barrett.
Voon was approached by the women to dress them for the Oscars because they felt she had the right feminine style and timeless sense of glamour that is perfect for the event.
Initially visiting Voon on the recommendation of a friend who had had a Sophie Voon wedding dress designed for her, Barrett fell in love with a particular 1920's style full length silk gown with a lace bodice.
"I have always been an admirer of the 20s fashion and this dress looks so feminine and sophisticated. Wearing it I will definitely feel like I belong on the red carpet. I think that the team at Voon knows how to dress women for the biggest days of their lives and in their range of designs, any woman can look and feel amazing. My experience working with Voon has been wonderful. Gemma in the shop is so knowledgeable about her work. She knew straight away what dresses will look good on me."
Although Voon is used to dressing clients for important moments in their lives this is the first time she has her designs at the Oscars. " I'm really excited and can't wait to watch the red carpet and the ceremony to see if I can spot my dresses! The ladies look stunning and I'm so pleased they will be wearing my designs. I think it's great that we have such a vibrant film industry in Wellington and hopefully at events like this we can showcase other forms of creativity from New Zealand too."
