On-Going Job Options for Motorhome Factory Workers

On-Going Job Options for Motorhome Factory Workers Good News

The Union representing workers affected by the closure of the Tourism Holdings Limited motorhome manufacturing plant in Hamilton is pleased that many of the redundant workers will have on-going employment options.

THL – which operates both sides of the Tasman - announced today it was closing its Hamilton plant - trading as Motek - with the loss of up to 100 jobs. Among the reasons given for the closure is the downturn in the motorhome market. About 30 workers are members of the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union.

At the same time, THL has announced it is setting up a joint venture arrangement with Auckland based Kea Manufacturing, and that Kea’s Albany factory will continue to manufacture motorhomes under the name RV Manufacturing Group.

Factory closures are always tremendously difficult for working people but we have been working with the company to do what we can to cushion the impact,” says Louisa Jones, EPMU National Industry Organiser. “The joint venture that THL is setting up with Kea in Auckland will provide an innovative opportunity to maintain a sustainable manufacturing base for the motorhome market in this country and continue to provide decent jobs.”

“We’ve negotiated a fair and reasonable re-location arrangement with the company that’ll mean a significant chunk of workers can continue to work for THL either in the new joint venture operation in Auckland, stay in Hamilton or undertake short-term contracts in Australia,” says Ms Jones.

The EPMU is also actively talking with a range of employers in Hamilton who may be in the position to employ ex - THL staff.
