Auckland Transport and GHD score major international innovation award
An innovative, cost effective and environmentally sustainable project commissioned by Auckland Transport has received a major international innovation award.
GHD, a leading engineering, architecture and environmental consulting company, is the Honour Awardee for the Small Projects Category of the 2012 International Water Association (IWA) Project Innovation Awards (Asia Pacific Region).
Auckland Transport’s project, “Innovative Solutions in Managing Stormwater Contaminants on Auckland Transport’s Road Network”, which was undertaken by GHD, is the first New Zealand project to have received an IWA Project Innovation award in this category.
Working with Auckland Transport, GHD developed the TetraTrap, an innovative, cost effective, and environmentally sustainable device, to improve the capture of litter and contaminants in catchpits.
When installed in roadside catchpits, TetraTraps are designed to filter out contaminants and gross pollutants that run off the roads meaning cleaner water in Auckland’s harbours, streams and road surfaces. The TetraTrap and its associated programme can be replicated in other cities around the world.
Auckland Transport Regional Programme Manager, Veenay Rambisheswar says “This project has raised the awareness about the importance of protecting our environment and has a very strong focus towards Auckland Transport’s objective to deliver an efficient, effective, safe and sustainable network.
Combined with the delivery of a substantive renewal programme, GHD has helped Auckland Transport meet their service level commitments in respect to the way stormwater is conveyed on road surfaces.
In delivering this project, GHD met Auckland Transport’s environmental and sustainability goals in regards to the condition, design, and performance of catchpits, soakholes and culverts.
The IWA’s Project Innovation Awards are a prestigious global competition which recognise and celebrate innovation and excellence in water engineering projects.
