An Earl Grey to Brighten New Zealand’s Day

/

MEDIA RELEASE JUNE 2012

An Earl Grey to Brighten New Zealand’s Day

New Zealanders chose it, and now it’s here: after canvassing the tastebuds of the country last year, Twinings is launching New Zealand Earl Grey – a special blend selected by New Zealanders all across the country.

Described by Twinings as “an Earl Grey to brighten your day – a stylish mix of sweet blossom and bergamot”, the chosen blend was the clear favourite during last year’s Twinings Great Earl Grey Taste-Off. The Twinings team travelled from the top to the bottom of New Zealand in a custom-designed vehicle, asking all Kiwis along the route to sample four different variations on the original Earl Grey blend and vote for their favourite. The public could also request tasting kits online to sample and vote for the blends at home.

Six months later, Twinings New Zealand Earl Grey will hit the shelves in July to sit alongside the existing Earl Grey, as well as Twinings New Zealand Breakfast as part of the growing Twinings “New Zealand” family of teas.

Twinings Earl Grey is a blend of fine black teas, delicately scented with bergamot. The new Twinings New Zealand Earl Grey has a similar profile, but with a special twist of orange blossom that Kiwis themselves selected as their favourite.

Stephen Twining, 10th generation of the Twinings family, joined the Taste-Off on its last leg and spoke to New Zealanders first-hand about what they wanted from their own special Earl Grey.

“New Zealanders were very clear on which was their favourite, of the four Earl Grey variations that we presented,” he says. “New Zealand has a very distinctive palate, and this blend’s soft citrus floral taste was extremely popular.”

Kiwis also selected St John as the charity they wanted to receive a donation from each pack sold.

“We’re very pleased that New Zealanders voted for St John as the winning charity partner during the Twinings tea-tasting campaign last year,” says St John Customers and Services Director Gerry Fitzgerald. “St John and Twinings are both recognised as part of New Zealanders’ everyday lives, and it is fantastic to see our brands connected through the launch of the latest addition to the Twinings Earl Grey range of tea.”

Twinings New Zealand Earl Grey will be available in supermarkets in early July for an RRP of $3.49 for a pack of 24 (with 5c from each pack going to St John) and $9.49 for a pack of 80 (with 10c from each pack going to St John).

Note to Editor:

Twinings was the first company to blend Earl Grey. In 1831, one of Earl Charles Grey’s employees rescued a Chinese Mandarin’s son from drowning, and to show his gratitude, the Mandarin gave the Prime Minister a special blend of tea.

Everyone loved the tea’s unique taste. So, before it ran out, Charles asked his tea merchant, Richard Twining, to recreate it for him. And the rest is history: over 200 years later, our Earl Grey range is still the only one to be approved by the current Earl, Earl Grey VI, who lends his signature to each box.
