Wellington tech stars continue to shine

Wellington’s status as New Zealand’s high tech capital has been confirmed with the release of this year’s TIN100.

The TIN100 measures the performance of New Zealand’s largest export-focused technology companies.

The 2014 report, just launched, shows that Wellington had 15 companies in the top 100, up from 13 last year.

Wellington’s high tech companies were led by Datacom (ranked number 2 for the second year in a row), Weta Digital, Xero, Fronde and Intergen, all with revenue of more than $50 million.

Xero and Datacom were also named in the top 10 companies to watch.

Newcomers to the list from the Wellington region were Provoke (custom software producers) and Fusion5 (software and consulting firm).

Gerard Quinn, CEO of economic development agency Grow Wellington, said Wellington should be proud of these companies, many of who were heavyweights in their fields.

“It’s great to see more technology companies from the region reach this level of success.”

Wellington has the highest concentration of web-based and digital technology companies in New Zealand and more people in the Wellington region now work in technology-related sectors than in the public sector.
