Twelve New Zealand tech firms ranked in top 100 of the annual index

Fifty-one New Zealand technology companies have been included in the 2014 Deloitte Technology Fast 500 Asia Pacific index, tying the record for Kiwi companies achieved in 2009 and outpacing last year’s 40 companies. Twelve are ranked in the top 100.

The index, announced in Hong Kong today, ranks the top 500 tech businesses according to their revenue growth over the past three years and sets the standard for high growth technology businesses in the Asia Pacific region.

Leading the list of New Zealand businesses is this year’s Deloitte Fast 50 winner Voyager Internet, ranked 23rd on the regional index with an impressive 1,391% growth. It is followed by cloud-based retail software platform Vend and men’s clothing retailer I Love Ugly, which come in 30th and 31th respectively.

Deloitte partner Darren Johnson says the 51 companies from New Zealand out-performs regional heavyweights South Korea (47) and Japan (45) on the index

“The growing Kiwi representation, and the fact that New Zealand companies now account for over 10% of the entire Asia Pacific index, is clear evidence that our technology companies can thrive on the world stage,” says Mr Johnson.

“As we saw in the Deloitte Fast 50 unveiled earlier this month, a growing number of Kiwi companies have embraced disruptive technologies; with many in business to help other companies better navigate this technological change.”

Auckland-based businesses lead the Kiwi contingent on the list with 24 companies represented, while there are 14 from Wellington, eight from the Central North Island and five from Canterbury.

The top-ranked business on this year’s Deloitte Technology Fast 500 Asia Pacific index is Daum Kakao Corp, the South Korean company behind the popular instant messaging application KakaoTalk. Based in Seoul, Daum Kakao Corp achieved an astonishing annual growth of 11,618%. It is the first time a South Korean company has been the overall winner.

In terms of the geographical spread, the largest number of companies are from China (100), followed by Taiwan and India (90 each), Australia (74), New Zealand (51), South Korea (47), Japan (45), Singapore (2) and Malaysia (1).

Revenue growth across the index averaged 405% this year, up from last year’s 356% average.
