New Zealand to train Vietnamese air traffic controllers
Vietnam’s air traffic controllers will be selected and trained by the internationally established training arm of Airways New Zealand, thanks to an agreement recently signed in Hanoi.
Graduates of the six-month programme will be employed by the Vietnam Air Traffic Management (VATM) Corporation which manages the country’s air traffic from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi and Da Nang.
Airways Head of Training Sharon Cooke says that Airways is looking forward to welcoming the first intake of 36 VATM students in October, after they complete an air traffic control induction programme in their home country.
“The students will be looked after in New Zealand through our homestay programme, where they will also experience life in this country and study alongside New Zealand students,” she says.
“As a training provider, we’re experienced in settling international students into their intensive training. Our supportive homestay environment will assist them with their language as well as their adaption into New Zealand life, helping them to succeed in the programme.”
Airways will select the students in Vietnam using its renowned SureSelect process, which clearly identifies those applicants most likely to succeed as air traffic controllers.
“Vietnam Air Traffic Management appreciates the cooperation with Airways New Zealand as one of the leading training providers of the next generation of ATCs in Vietnam,” says Mr Trinh Nhu Long, Director of the Investment Department of VATM.
“The two parties will work alongside each other not only for training activities but also for other consultancy activities, with a long term vision to 2020.”
