Ngai Tahu Property Chief Executive Signals Departure

Ngai Tahu Property Chief Executive Signals Departure

Ngāi Tahu Property Chief Executive, Tony Sewell, has announced that he will be leaving Ngāi Tahu Property to explore new business opportunities.

“After 21 years working for Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu I have decided that it is time for me to investigate new opportunities and I plan to utilise my expertise providing strategic property advice to private clients as well as undertaking a number of Directorships. Ngāi Tahu Property is in extremely great shape, it is an amazing company that has gone from strength to strength post Settlement and now feels like the right time to announce my departure. During my time with Ngāi Tahu Property I have been fortunate to enjoy the unqualified support of a fantastic team at an Iwi, board and staff level. I am appreciative of that support and the opportunities that I have been able to pursue,” said Tony Sewell.

Mr Sewell will leave the company in December 2016. The search for a suitably qualified replacement will commence immediately and it is anticipated that the new appointee will join the company at the beginning of 2016. At that point Mr Sewell will assume the role of Director Major Projects. This transition period will ensure that there is a managed hand over to the new Chief Executive at a time when Ngāi Tahu Property has a number of large projects underway.

“Tony will leave behind a significant legacy that includes a contribution to Ngāi Tahu both pre and post Settlement. Tony was involved in negotiation of the Ngāi Tahu Settlement and with his team he has successfully grown Ngai Tahu Property to a point where the value of equity at 30 June 2015 is $553M. Tony has played a key role in managing the implementation of the Deferred Selection Process and the Right of First Refusal, the establishment of Ngāi Tahu Farming and the positioning of Ngāi Tahu Property so that it is now one of the most experienced participants in the South Island property sector,” said Barry Bragg Chair of Ngāi Tahu Property.

“Tony and the Board have had discussions about this decision for some time as we were all conscious of the need to ensure a smooth hand over at a time when the demands on the Company are significant. Ngāi Tahu is playing an integral role in the Christchurch rebuild and has a number of flagship developments in the pipeline. For this reason, we are pleased that Tony will remain with the Company until December 2016. This will ensure a smooth transition and succession, helping to ensure ongoing success for the Company,’ said Mr Bragg.

In addition to his role as Chief Executive of Ngāi Tahu Property Tony Sewell holds a number of board positions including President of the Canterbury Employers Chamber of Commerce, Vice President of Business NZ Council and Former National President of the Property Council NZ.
