Passengers disembark from KiwiRail ferry

KiwiRail advises that the Kaiarahi ferry has now berthed in Picton and is unloading its passengers, following earthquake damage at Picton and Wellington ports. Port authorities have now cleared one berth for use though the terminal has sustained damage and remains closed.

The Kaitaki and Aratere ferries remain anchored in Wellington harbour. It is hoped the Kaitaki will resume operations later today, however weather warnings have been issued and may impact this. Both rail spans are still awaiting clearance.

KiwiRail advises the lines north of Palmerston North are now open following a completed inspection. The lines between Dannevirke and Waipukarau and Kakaramea and Waitotara remain closed.

An inspection of the North Island Main Trunk Line (NIMT) between Palmerston North and Wellington is still underway and the line remains closed.

There is significant damage to the Main North Line between Picton and Christchurch, particularly around Kaikoura. Early reports indicate this may be closed for several days.

Rail services are running between Christchurch and Invercargill following inspections.

Passenger train services the TranzAlpine and Coastal Pacific in the South Island are not running today, however the TranzAlpine may be able to run tomorrow. The Northern Explorer is currently running only to Palmerston North and the Capital Connection is not running while the lines are inspected.
