First New Zealander to
win International Professional Photographer's
Award.
Stuart Riddell's artistry with light and water have won national and international acclaim in the photographic world. 'Between the Sheets' achieved Gold in the New Zealand Institute of Professional Photography Iris Awards 2007, and double merit in the Professional Photographer's of America International Awards. The ethereal image has also been selected for the acclaimed (American) Loan Collection; a first for any New Zealander.
"This type of recognition from your peers is a whole different level of appreciation," says Riddell. In the NZIPP Iris Awards this year, the image was the highest scoring in its category, securing gold for Riddell.
He approached the concept by breaking down the elements that made up the composition. 'Between the Sheets' was photographed in his expansive Howick studio, using a shallow pond. The model held the diaphanous sheets which Riddell re photographed again later to highlight their form and shape. An array of watering devices including hoses and a watering can were used to create the areas where the water sparkles and connects. A swimjet in a separate pool created the turbulence.
"We're constantly finessing and fine tuning. You want your clients to love what you do, but it means a lot when your peers love what you do as well," comments Riddell.
