What do you get when two Wellington sisters write two different short plays for one double bill? A stroppy mind"reading actress and a water cooler tango in a Wellington art gallery.
The Gusty Group presents Duet a Fringe Festival double bill of Falling in Love…Again written by Georgia Jamieson Emms and Office FYI: A Musical written by Francesca Emms. Duet is showing as part of the 2009 Fringe Festival at the Mary Newton Gallery.
The first of the two plays
Falling in Love…Again is a quirky comedy which
explores the relationship between two actors trying to
rehearse a play while going though a messy separation.
Writer Georgia Jamieson Emms is the former Salient
columnist Emilie Le Strange and opera singer.
Office FYI: A Musical is a fast paced,
whimsical musical set in the office of a government
department. The musical is a recipient of the Playmarket
Emerging Playwrights Commended Award. Mark Amery, director
of Playmarket, New Zealand’s playwrights’ agency and
script advisory service, says, “The Playmarket award is
New Zealand’s most significant award for young play
writers. It has seen some of New Zealand’s most talented
writers come through this competition which is recognition
of Francesca’s writing”.
The Gusty Group will be performing Duet at the Mary Newton Art Gallery in Vivian Street. Josephine O’Sullivan, Gusty Group’s producer says, “We thought about doing a traditional musical in a theatre space but had trouble pinning down a location. Then we came across the art gallery. The moment we stepped inside the gallery door we could see both plays playing out in our minds. The acoustics are amazing. Without a doubt we had found our location It provides an interesting challenge which we feel fits in perfectly with the nature of the Fringe Festival”
The Gusty Group aims to bring original and accessible musicals that strike a chord with New Zealand audiences. The group endeavours to create theatre that will appeal to local humour and that is an accessible and intimate experience for a contemporary New Zealand audience. Tickets are $18 with a limit of 28 seats on each of the five nights.
