‘Dining In The Dark’ Hits Auckland
Imagine sitting in the most elegant and sophisticated restaurant in Auckland and not being able to see a thing. Imagine eating dish after dish of that restaurant’s superb food, seeing nothing and relying totally on taste, smell, touch and texture.
This November, Metro magazine teams with New Tim Tam Classic Dark to stage DINING IN THE DARK at Clooney Restaurant in Auckland. An exceptional evening of sensory enrichment, in which blindfolded diners in a completely darkened restaurant will be served a five-course gourmet meal with accompanying wines, with every dish expertly crafted by Clooney’s head chef Des Harris.
Diners will be led into the dimly lit restaurant, which will then be plunged into complete darkness. The degustation style menu will be a surprise, so diners will have to identify what they’re eating by their senses of taste, smell and potentially touch.
“This will be an unmissable experience for adventurous foodies,” says Metro editor Bevan Rapson. “In a field where visual presentation is usually so important, it will be fascinating to explore how the absence of sight heightens the other senses.”
The “blind dining” concept has already created a stir of interest in Europe and North America. This is the first chance for Aucklanders to judge for themselves whether their taste experience is heightened in darkness. They’ll also discover how social interaction changes when visual cues are removed.
"Tim Tam is absolutely thrilled to be involved in this New Zealand first Dining in the Dark experience and can't wait to see the specially crafted dessert using it's very own new recipe Tim Tam Classic Dark" says Kate Berry Marketing Manager for Arnott’s.
There’ll be no sharp steak knives, no long-stemmed wine glasses and no hot soup, but diners are advised not to wear their favourite white dress or shirt.
