Review of Film Commission

Review of Film Commission

The New Zealand Writer's Guild welcomes the release of the Ministry of Culture and Heritage report today on the NZ Film Commission written by Sir Peter Jackson and David Court.

"We believe this is a very comprehensive analysis of the current situation and outlines some exciting new strategies to kick-start a new era in New Zealand Film-making," says Writer's Guild Executive Director, Steven Gannaway.

"It's especially encouraging to see that the report recognises that more direct support of screenwriting talent is viewed as a vital component for a vibrant, stable, and productive NZ film industry. We certainly hope that this translates into real changes being made that acknowledges the primacy of a great script in the film-making process."

"One particularly positive step is the spotlight being put on removing the current the rule for a producer to be attached at the very beginning of the script writing process. The NZWG believes this moves a great deal towards putting the focus back on the talent and passion of the creative, leading to stories that reflect truly embody the individuality and dynamism that audiences are looking for."

The Writer's Guild would like to acknowledge the commitment, passion and ability of the current New Zealand Film Commission Staff, and look forward to seeing them actioning these recommendations.
