More than 500 kapa haka performers aged 14 to 80 are competing in the Tamaki Makaurau Regional Kapa Haka Competition this weekend at the Aotea Centre, THE EDGE as part of Matariki Festival 10.
Entries for this year’s competition are almost double the number for 2008 with 21 teams competing for six places to represent Tamaki Makaurau (Auckland) at Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival in Gisborne in February 2011.
Twelve teams competed yesterday (SUBS: Sat 3 July) with the final nine teams, including current national champions Te Waka Huia, to compete today from 9am.
Organisers expect sold-out audiences today to see Te Waka Huia and the other teams who represented Tamaki Makaurau at the national championships in 2009. The teams to represent Tamaki Makaurau at Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival in February 2011 will be announced at 4pm today.
The event is part of the region-wide Matariki Festival 10 which runs until July 14 and includes more than 100 events across the Auckland region.
