Wellington’s young arts talent splash out

Artsplash, Wellington City Council’s children’s arts festival, returns this month to celebrate dance, music, drama, visual art and wearable art for primary and intermediate-aged children.

Now in its 23rd year, the festival will present some of the best young talent from the Wellington region from 16–25 August at the Michael Fowler Centre and the Opera House.

Around 8000 students from schools throughout the region are taking part in the event, which features wearable art and music performances accompanied by the Artsplash Festival Band and internationally acclaimed local opera singer Ben Makisi. There are also dance performances, including hip hop, cheerleading, American Jazz, contemporary dance and line and Scottish dancing.

Don’t miss the free Artsplash visual art exhibition in the Michael Fowler Centre’s Renouf Foyer from Monday 16 until Thursday 19 August. If drama is more your thing, come along and see the region’s finest young actors at the Opera House on Wednesday 25 August at 5.30pm.

Wellington Mayor Kerry Prendergast says Artsplash is a fantastic event. “It’s a great chance for friends and family to see their children, brothers and sisters perform. It’s also a chance for our young people to get valuable stage experience. So come along and support Artsplash and help celebrate 23 years of artistic endeavour from our talented children.”

All tickets for performances are $4 – limited door sales will be available.
