International artists touch down in Wellington

International exhibition roundabout brings artists from all over the world

Wellington is about to play host to artists from around the world, including Tibet, China, Israel, Thailand, Australia and the United States. These artists are flying into the capital for the opening weekend of City Gallery Wellington’s upcoming exhibition roundabout, which opens to the public at noon, Saturday 25 September 2010.

These high-profile international artists will be in the city for roundabout’s installation and opening and will also take part in an array of events over the exhibition’s inaugural weekend, 25 and 26 September 2010.

Titus Kaphar, a young artist making waves in the New York art world, will be in Wellington, along with Tibetan artist Gonkar Gyatso. Gyatso builds mesmerising patterns out of hundreds of stickers and images from everyday magazines. His work is internationally renowned, having exhibited at the Venice Biennale in 2009 and most recently at the 17th Biennale of Sydney 2010.

These artists will be joined by Tavares Strachan, born in the Bahamas but now based in New York, Vernon Ah Kee and Tony Albert from Australia, Zadok Ben David from Israel, Feng Bin from China, and Thai artist Pinaree Sanpitak. Sanpitak is one of Thailand’s most internationally respected artists, and has exhibited her work throughout Asia, Europe, the United States and Australia. City Gallery Wellington is excited to present her work for the first time in New Zealand.

roundabout’s opening weekend will be filled with a varied series of public programmes for visitors to enjoy. Several of the artists involved in roundabout will speak about their work at 1pm Saturday 25 September. This event will be followed, at 2:30pm, by an in-depth panel discussion with artists Shane Cotton and Tavares Strachan and roundabout founding director David Teplitzky, from whose collection roundabout is drawn. This discussion will be chaired by Massey University lecturer Dr Martin Patrick.

And finally, on Sunday 26 September at 2pm, well-known New Zealand multi-media artist Lisa Reihana and Brisbane-based artist Vernon Ah Kee will talk about their work and present new video art in the Adam Auditorium.

City Gallery Wellington will be fully closed to the public for two weeks from Sunday 12 to Saturday 25 September for the installation of roundabout.
