Take A Flutter On The Galway
Races - On Maori Television!
Dodgy schemes, misplaced dreams, wanton excesses and outright sin! A major comedy drama series set at one of Ireland’s most famous festivals, RASAI NA GAILLIMHE (The Galway Races) premieres on Maori Television on Tuesday October 5 at 9.30PM.
Galway Race Week is the perfect setting for the darkly humorous, seven-part drama to unfold, as characters cross paths and interconnect, sometimes in unlikely ways. By the end of the week, each find their lives profoundly changed.
Corrupt politician ULTAN KEANE is attracting unwanted bad press to his party. In an election year this just won’t do. Under pressure, he welcomes a break in his home constituency of Galway, but his fortunes soon turn from bad to disastrous.
Frustrated local policewoman AOIFE NI CHAOIMH is bored with menial duties, and fancies herself in the fast lane. She keeps a keen eye on the bad deeds and illegal acts happening around her, yet she's just as capable of committing the odd illicit deeds herself, in the name of ambition.
The DE BARRA brothers are a set of criminal siblings from Donegal who plan to stage a daring robbery at the famous sporting fixture. Their target is an oblivious bookie EOIN BOLAND who happens to be having a very successful and eventful week.
LIAM REILLY is a jockey who is fed up with throwing up and throwing races. In a controversial race, he refuses to follow the dubious instructions of horse-owner NOEL LACEY, with far-reaching consequences.
A middle-class mother SINEAD O’CONNELL has hit hard times and plans to re-invent herself as a high-class prostitute in her suburban Galway home.
The seven deadly sins - Pride, Gluttony, Envy, Lust, Sloth, Wrath and Greed - are all present and incorrect as themes for each episodes.
Filmed on location in Galway, the series has a wonderful cast viewers will remember from such Irish shows as Ballykissangel and Father Ted, as well as recent films such as Sweeney Todd, Breakfast On Pluto and Secret of Roan Inish.
Filmed mainly in Gaelic with English subtitles, RASAI NA GAILLIMHE was made for Ireland’s indigenous channel, TG4.
“A twisting plotline, unexpected reversals of fate, hapless heroes and scheming rogues make for some hilarious and infectious viewing,” says general manager of programming Haunui Royal. “This is a delightful and entertaining series, and I think discerning viewers will definitely enjoy the ride.”
