Kiwis break a world record

Kiwis break a world record

New Zealanders proved they’ve got what it takes to break a world record during Sunday’s rugby match at North Harbour Stadium

The air-guitar world record was shattered by the 4,500 strong crowd taking part in the effort which was hosted by the North Harbour Rugby Union in support of StarJam.

The official world record stands at 1,436 and is held by Brock University in Canada. Yesterday’s effort at North Harbour stadium saw this record unofficially broken, with the majority of the crowd enthusiastically getting involved.

NZ Idol winner Ben Lummis along with national air guitar champion, Louis Ewen and brother Carl got the crowd to their feet, jamming to ACDC’s iconic track Thunderstruck.

National air guitar champion, Louis Ewen, was impressed by the level of enthusiasm that came from the crowd.

“It was fantastic to see the crowd getting behind the record attempt so passionately,” Ewen says. “I’ve never seen air-guitar done by such a mixed group of people – it made me really proud to be involved.”

Julie Bartlett , CEO and Founder of StarJam, is delighted by the support shown by the crowd who threw their spare change into buckets after the world record attempt.

“Every dollar counts.  We have waiting lists for our programmes and we don’t like denying the children the opportunity to get into StarJam.” says Bartlett. “It was overwhelming to see the compassion from the community.”

The record breaking event was orchestrated by communications students from AUT University who are assisting the charity.

The world record attempt was held to promote StarJam’s innovative fundraising campaign, Money for Jam. This charity challenge encourages people to hit the streets and go busking.  All funds raised from the Money for Jam campaign will enable the charity to increase the number of performance programmes for children with disabilities.

Auckland- based StarJam creates national and international performance and limelight opportunities for young people with disabilities.  Known as “Jammers”, StarJam kids gain respect, confidence, empowerment, new friends, new hope and new purpose within a fun and inclusive atmosphere.
