Bumper season of club cricket starting this week

Cricket Wellington Media Release

Wednesday 20 October 2010

Bumper season of club cricket starting this weekend

A bumper club cricket season starts this Saturday with a Twenty20 round for all Intercity Men’s grades. The Pearce Cup and Hazlett Trophy grades will also play a One-Day 50-over round on Labour Day Monday, while the Senior Women’s grade commences on Saturday with an opening round of One-Day fixtures.

Most other grades start the following weekend, Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 October, subject to ground availability.

Ground renovations throughout the Wellington region are behind schedule due to inclement weather throughout August and September, forcing a disrupted start to the season for all grades as more grounds become available.

Expect another keenly fought summer of cricket, with Eastern Suburbs starting the 2010/11 season hoping to win an unprecedented 10 Pearce Cup titles in a row. Several clubs will be hot on their heels, led by last year’s beaten Pearce Cup finalist Karori who won the National One-Day club title in Auckland over Easter.

Also vying for Pearce Cup honours are Naenae Old Boys (third last year), Onslow (fourth), North City (fifth), Taita (sixth), Hutt District (seventh) and newly promoted Wellington Collegians who are back in the top grade after a decade. Collegians take the place of University who drop down to the Hazlett Trophy after a year in Premier Cricket.

The Hazlett Trophy will also be hotly contested, with University, Petone-Riverside, Upper Hutt and Johnsonville all competing for a spot in the top flight for the following season.

Defending champions Onslow will again be the team to beat in the Senior Women’s grade.

Player movement this season sees several new and returning faces to the region. Players such as Leighton Morgan (to Upper Hutt, from Otago), Leighton Burtt (Onslow, from Canterbury), Marc Calkin ( Naenae Old Boys from Central Districts) and Andrew Lamb (Onslow, from Hutt District) will add spark to their new teams.

An emphasis on twenty20 cricket will see up to 37 teams participating throughout both Wellington and Hutt Valley in the shortest form of the game. This is a 48 percent increase on last season.

A Twenty20 weekend of Pearce Cup and Hazlett Trophy matches will take place over two days on 27 and 28 November, the weekend before the start of the HRV Cup domestic Twenty20 competition involving the Wellington Firebirds.

The One-Day finals for both Pearce Cup and Hazlett Trophy are on 6 February (Waitangi Day), while the three-day Pearce Cup final will be held at the Basin Reserve from Saturday 2 April to Monday 4 April.

There will be no Hazlett Trophy final this season. The winner and promoted team for the following season will be the leading side at the conclusion of the final round-robin Saturday 26 March.
