Brooke's Golden Double

It’s a triumphant return for Brooke Fraser. Out of the box, her third album Flags flies straight to the summit to give her a third successive #1 album debut. Meanwhile lead single Something In The Water jumps two places to see Brooke ink her first #1 single. Both also claim gold sales certification.

Her previous releases, the 8x platinum What To Do With Daylight (2003) and sophomore 5x platinum Albertine (2006) also opened on top.

The former Wellingtonian becomes the first local act to claim the Albums / Singles double since Ben Lummis in June 2004 and also the first Kiwi female soloist to have a #1 single in five years (when season two NZ Idol Rosita Vai went to #1 with All I Ask).

The self-produced LA-recorded Flags makes #3 on the ARIA charts across the Tasman also, easily besting the #29 high tide mark of Albertine.

Brooke now heads out on tour, beginning in Dunedin on the 26th.

Two of the dates are already sold out, as are eight of her forthcoming North American gigs, so all in all it’s a pretty good week the 26-year-old.

The New Singles

#4 J.Williams featuring K.One - Night Of Your Life

He may’ve missed out in the Tui arena but J.Williams continues to log Top10 singles, claiming a third in 2010 with the week’s biggest new tune Night Of Your Life at #4. It’s the fifth hook-up of his eight-strong hit tally. This year’s You Got Me with Scribe sat at #1 for four weeks while #2 follow-up Takes Me Higher with Dane Rumble is still on the charts. This time Joshua Elia is joined by newcomer K.One (aka Kaleb Vitale).

#7 Far East Movement - Like A G6

Seemingly out of nowhere comes Far East Movement. Kev Nish, Prohgress, J-Splif, and DJ Virman are of Chinese / Japanese, Korean and Filipino extraction who call LA home. Together they’ve been together since 2003 and rocket straight into the Top10 at #7 with Like A G6. The track is lifted off upcoming Free Wired album, due early November.

#21 Boyzone - Gave It All Away

X Factor judge and recent VNZMA guest presenter Ronan Keating returns with the now slightly older boy band Boyzone. The group logs a seventh New Zealand hit, the first in 10 years with Gave It All Away, new at #21. The former Irish #1 song was written by Mika (the Beirut-born Brit pop singer, not our own Mika).

#24 Taylor Swift - Back To December

Three hits on this week’s Top40 belong to Taylor Swift, including two new additions, all of which feature on her third album Speak Now, due in two weeks. Mine peaked at #11 while Back To December arrives at #24 and title track Speak Now at #34. The 20-year-old now boasts seven hits in a 20-month period here.

#13 Cliff Richard - Bold As Brass

Top10 in his UK homeland, India-born Harry Webb returns with a big band record Bold As Brass, fresh at #13. The just-turned 70-year-old now has 26 chart albums here including the one #1, Cliff Richard 1958-1981.

#17 Robbie Williams - In And Out Of Consciousness: Greatest Hits 1990-2010

The UK’s current #1 set by Robbie Williams arrives at #17 here. It’s his lowest arrival since his 1997 #24 Life Thru A Lens solo debut opened at #39. Last year’s Reality Killed The Video Star made #7. Among his five chart-toppers is his original best of compile, Greatest Hits from 2004.

#36 Tom Sharplin And Friends - Let’s Sing In The Sunshine

Auckland-born, Tauranga-raised music industry veteran Tom Sharplin is one of the country’s most prolific rock n rollers and for the first time ever in a career spanning over 40 years, he finally has a chart album. Let’s Sing In The Sunshine, new at #36, is a collection of classic Kiwiana sing-alongs with Suzanne, Shona Laing, Toni Williams, Gray Bartlett and Ray Woolf. Previously Tom registered four hit singles from 1972 to 1984, beginning with the #12 Love Is A Beautiful Song in 1972.
