Kiwis can fly - NZ's First National Freeflying Competition

“Kiwis can fly exceptionally well” according to the ‘V Freeflight Champs’ event organiser Dave Hockly.

A New Zealand first, the national wind tunnel competition was held on Saturday 27th November at Freefall Xtreme in the Agroventures Park in Rotorua.

Contestants are suspended in the air by a 180kmp/h wind stream and perform flips, twists and balanced body flying positions. Judges were looking for unique tricks and styles from competitors to find the nations best freeflyer.

Stacey Murfitt, 30, from Hamilton was a favourite to win the competition. After executing such moves as a triple front flip and a running back flip
he took home $1100 cash for best trick and the National V Freeflight Champ title.

The Peanut Butter and Air Jam proved to be a highlight of the competition with a range of costumes and even a role-play between Spider Woman and a ‘damsel in distress’ rescue.

Dave Hockly says nothing like this has been done before in the Kiwi skydiving community. He looks forward to running future events and helping to grow the sport of freeflying.
