“Human beings have exhausted the limits of the Planet Earth and there is an urgent need to rethink our relationship with the natural world.” David Suzuki

Cinemagoers will be able to watch the latest cinema release of FORCE OF NATURE safe in the knowledge it has been delivered with minimal harm to the environment thanks to a world-first film distribution initiative from trailblazing New Zealand based film company Curious Films in partnership with iconic, award-winning and internationally renowned scientist, educator, broadcaster and activist, David Suzuki.

Inspired by his visits to Wellington, New Zealand which David Suzuki deems to be “one of the most progressive countries that I have ever been to in terms of environmental consciousness”; now nearly 75 years old, David Suzuki, delivers a 'last lecture' in FORCE OF NATURE — what he describes as "a distillation of my life and thoughts, my legacy, what I want to say before I die". The heart-felt distillation of his incredible life’s work is a biography of ideas that reaches across the major social, scientific, cultural and political events of the last 70 years and delivers a life-changing message which transcends race, class and age.

David will be hosting a personal master class at the Sustainable Living Festival (where he will also be a key speaker) in Australia and is offering two lucky students from New Zealand the opportunity to attend, create and present a speech about their vision for life on planet earth. The student will return to New Zealand to deliver this speech to communities and government representatives around the country replicating David Suzuki’s daughter, Severn Suzuki’s infamous speech (at the age of 12 years old) “Tell the World” at the UN Earth Summit in 1992.

Film distribution is a costly and environmentally damaging process that has remained largely unchanged over the last 100 years. Curious Films in partnership with David Suzuki is the first company to actively tackle the emission and waste issues involved in bringing films to cinemagoers and DVD buyers by avoiding chemical processing, petrol consumption and other waste by-products involved in the process.

“There’s been a lot of talk about the film industry’s damaging impact on the environment recently, but we wanted to actively do something positive instead of waiting for recommendations and regulations,” says Curious Film’s Distribution’s partner Michael Wrenn. “When I first watched FORCE OF NATURE, I was inspired by David Suzuki’s passion to make the world a safer place for future generations and I wanted this commitment and drive to be incorporated into the release of the film in New Zealand where there is a rapidly increasing environmentally conscious audience. It’s the perfect opportunity to step up to the plate and be the first company to risk venturing into environmentally responsible film distribution.”

“The nature of film releasing in New Zealand has changed substantially over the years and with it the environmental impact. By working closely with the digitally equipped e-cinemas through the country we can deliver FORCE OF NATURE through download and the national postal system. We are working at grass roots level to get the film our leaflets and promotional materials distributed by environmental means including walking and cycling where possible. We hope to make the viewing of the film and the dissemination of its message the first conscionable act of 2011, New Year is all about resolutions after all”.

Michael Wrenn believes it’s a small but significant step towards encouraging the big Hollywood studios players to change their business of producing and distributing films around the world. “If this trial run is successful we hope to change our business model for future releases. We know we’re still governed by certain outside constraints such as transport and other factors but we’re confident that by setting a standard, other companies in New Zealand and around the world will follow suit.

David Suzuki will host the New Zealand Premier of FORCE OF NATURE in Auckland on February 22nd in what will be his last EVER visit to New Zealand.
