Marlborough Wines Shine at Sydney Competition
•Five Trophies from Sydney International Wine Competition
•26% of Top 100 Wines come from Marlborough
Marlborough wines picked up five trophies at the recent Sydney International Wine Competition, along with dozens of Blue-Gold Medals and made up more than a quarter of the Top 100 Wines.
Celebrating its 30th Anniversary the Sydney International Wine Competition judges all the wines alongside food. Wines that are rated as worthy of a gold medal and also complement food are awarded a Blue-Gold.
In total Marlborough wines achieved 45 Blue-Golds, with 10 styles represented, ranging from Sparkling, to Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling to Pinot Noir. The five Trophies were awarded to a Sparkling Wine, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling.
With hundreds of wines from all over the world entered in the competition, judges have the hard task of choosing not only the very best in each category, but also the very best 100. For Marlborough to have 26 of those top 100 places is an amazing feat, says Wine Marlborough’s GM Marcus Pickens.
“What is an even greater achievement is the range of varieties that are represented in the Top 100 wines Marlborough is renowned for Sauvignon Blanc, but the success of this competition for our wines, is that we also were represented by a range of other varieties like Pinot Gris, Rosé, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and even Gruener Veltliner. It just shows the versatility and quality that is the Marlborough wine industry.”
