2 Day Countdown to Sounds Aotearoa

2 DAY COUNTDOWN TO SOUNDS AOTEAROA

A two-day event featuring some of the world’s most experienced and innovative music industry professionals, Sounds Aotearoa is a New Zealand Music Expo designed to enrich the NZ music industry and expose NZ music to the global market. Taking place on the 16th and 17th of March at the TSB Showplace in beautiful New Plymouth, and preceding the popular Womad festival, Sounds Aotearoa is by day a trade expo and conference and by night a showcase of some of the most exciting world-class NZ grown talent.

This year Sounds Aotearoa features a host of international music industry experts including the legendary Don Letts, a punk and reggae music icon who documented the British punk scene, and who currently hosts weekly BBC music show, ‘Culture Clash Radio’. Joining Letts as a keynote speaker is Australia’s No.1 festival director Peter Noble, who has over 30 years’ experience as a promoter and record label owner of Aim Records, and more recently as the director of Bluesfest which has become a unique event on the Australian calendar, recently winning the ‘2010 Australian Event of the Year’ award.

Other industry heavyweights presenting at the expo are Malcolm Haynes, who has over 30 years industry experience (including Glastonbury, and the Big Chill Festival), and Ben Mendelson, who has been charged with launching the ‘World Music’ genre, culminating in WOMEX, the biggest and most prestigious trade show in the world. Joining these luminaries is a host of successful and inspiring speakers from the UK, the US, Australia and NZ.

In the evenings, Sounds Aotearoa will move to the Theatre Royal, New Plymouth where attendees will be treated to some of the best Aotearoa sounds around. Wednesday 16th March features the legendary and politically conscious Moana & the Tribe, along with the Brazilian, Cuban and Afro-beat rhythms of the Batucada Sound Machine, the captivating soul excursions of Wellington duo Bebe Deluxe, and the unforgettable vocals of Victoria Girling-Butcher (Lucid 3) in her solo project, Lupin.

The line-up for Thursday, 17th March features Electric Wire Hustle, the Wellington troubadours who fuse funk, soul, and hiphop in genre-hopping fun, and Northland’s 1814, whose upbeat R&B roots reggae has been wowing audiences all over the country. Joining them is NZ born Niuean musician Malcolm Lakatani(Che Fu and the Crates) who is currently working on his first solo album, and Pacific Curls who perform songs that link the Pacific’s primal myths to Scotland’s mysticism.

Dedicated to providing an unprecedented expert perspective, and showcasing NZ’s finest musicians, Sounds Aotearoa is a must for anyone involved in the NZ music industry!
