Outward Sound Recipients Round 2 2011
Outward Sound provides assistance for market development initiatives, encouraging and supporting the entry of New Zealand music and musicians into global markets. New Zealand music industry practitioners (artists, managers etc.) and firms (record companies and associated businesses) can apply for assistance through the programme for a range of international market development activities including:
• Market visits
• In-market
representation
• Publicity and promotion
•
Marketing materials
• Showcases, trade fairs and other
events
The Outward Sound programme is implemented and
managed by the New Zealand Music Commission. It is inclusive
of music from all genres, styles and niches and applicants
may target the international markets that are appropriate to
them. Bands, composers, songwriters, producers, and solo
artists - at different stages of international market
development - are able to access the programme. The
foundations of the programme are research, collaboration,
network development and information sharing.

Outward Sound is pleased to announce the
2nd round of grant recipients for 2011.
Eight grants were
awarded, these include one Stage Three, one Stage Two, three
Stage One, and three Business Development grants.
Ladyhawke – Stage 3.
Pip Brown
AKA Ladyhawke has been awarded a Stage Three grant to tour,
setup and promote the international release of Ladyhawke’s
sophomore album through Modular/Universal.
The artist’s
debut album is considered one of the essential albums of
2008 and has received critical acclaim from everyone from
Rolling Stone to Pitchfork to Q Magazine. The album sold
over 300,000 albums worldwide and received Gold status in
the UK and Australia and was certified Platinum in New
Zealand. Ladyhawke received six Tuis at the Vodafone New
Zealand Music Awards in 2009 including Vodafone Single of
the Year, Vodafone Album of the Year, International
Achievement, Mazda Best Female Solo Artist, Pacific Blue
Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Best Dance/Electronica
Album.
Electric Wire Hustle – Stage
2.
Over the past year Electric Wire Hustle have
signed to respected UK label BBE and have released their
debut album in the UK, Europe and the USA. The band have
been awarded a Stage Two grant to assist in the band’s
relocation to Berlin where they will – with the help of
their UK booking agent Elastic Artists - undertake extensive
tours in Europe and the UK including many festival dates.
The band will also be using the opportunity to set up the
release of their second album due for release at the end of
this year.
Avalanche City – Stage 1.
After
a massive start to the year with a number one NZ single Love
Love Love and a #4 album A Stage One grant was awarded to
Avalanche City to showcase at Musexpo, The Radio Summit LA,
and in New York City. These showcases resulted in the band
being signed to the Warner Music Group and securing a
worldwide release of their album Our New Life Above The
Ground.
The Earlybirds – Stage 1.
After
appearing at Song Summit in Sydney, The Earlybirds have
partnered with Big Tree Artists and are relocating to
Australia to undertake an extensive tour based around
residencies in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. A Stage One
grant was awarded.
Tiny Ruins – Stage 1.
Hollie
Fullbrook aka Tiny Ruins received a Stage One grant to
undertake an 18 day tour to support the Australian release
of her debut album Some Were Meant For Sea through
Spunk/EMI. In addition to playing her Australian release
shows she will be supporting label mates Seeker Lover
Keeper, a supergroup comprising of Sally Seltmann, Holly
Throsby, and Sarah Blasko, on multiple dates as well as
meeting with press organized through her label.

Stars
Frequency Media Group – Business
Development Grant.
A Business Development Grant was
awarded to Frequency Media Group to attend Music Matters in
Singapore.
Music Matters is the pioneer music industry
event in the Asia Pacific region and is a gathering of key
players in the global music industry. It sees music industry
players from around the world - from artists to music
producers to managers to label executives to mobile and
online entertainment providers - coming together to talk
about the advancement of the music scene through workshops,
seminars and showcases. Music Matters provides a one-stop
access point for those interested in the Asia Pacific
entertainment business and is attended by over 400
companies.
Parachute Arts Trust – Business
Development Grant
The Parachute Arts Trust was
awarded a Business Development Grant for a sales and
promotion trip to North America and South Africa with the
primary objective of securing concert promoters, media,
venues, to set up future business and touring activities for
the Parachute Band for a late 2011/12 international
launch.
Isaac Aesili – Business Development
Grant
Isaac Aesili was awarded a Business Development
Grant to base himself in Hamburg Germany where he will be
overseeing and participating in the launch of his album Eye
See (released through Soulab) and his band Karlmarx’s
debut the Karlmarx Project (released through Melting Pot
Music). While in Germany, Isaac will be meeting with current
and future business partners and taking part in promotional
activities - including print, web and radio interviews.
