Open City—The Love Edition City Gallery Wellington heats up

Open City—The Love Edition
City Gallery Wellington heats up and is open late

City Gallery is opening its doors late for a mid-winter party, Open City—The Love Edition, on Friday 8 July 6pm–9:30pm. With music, tours and an array of exhibitions on offer, this is the ideal winter warmer.

Open City is City Gallery’s regular event where the entire gallery space is open until late and the shows are accompanied by the talent of local musicians and performers. This July’s Open City is dubbed ‘The Love Edition’ and takes its inspiration from the current exhibition Tender is the Night, which explores love, loss and desire through the work of a range of artists.

Open City—The Love Edition will kick off with tours of Tender is the Night from 6:15pm. Visitors can pick from either the ‘maudlin tragedy tour’ or the ‘rose-tinted joy tour’ of the show depending on their current perspective on romance.

Local pop musician Little Bark will then play a set of her crisp dance tunes as well as some more experimental numbers with her band. Little Bark is one half of musician Sophie Burbery’s two-part musical project. Burbery’s two-sided album Hope is Rubbery was released in 2010 and she has recently returned from an acclaimed nationwide tour.

DJ TV DiSKO will round the evening off with a set self-described as “ drawing on sounds that cut across time and space, kitschy and earnest, to create a soundscape tumescent with eros and romance.”

The ever-excellent Nikau café will provide a cash bar for gallery goers. All the galleries will be open for late-night exploring of City Gallery’s current shows Tender is the Night, Wayne Barrar: An Expanding Subterra, Colour/Field, What Lies Beneath: Gabby O’Connor, and Lounge Room Tribalism.
