Countdown brings glamour to grocery shopping

Countdown brings glamour to grocery shopping with the latest collection of Trelise Cooper eco bags

12 July 2011: With more than 160,000 sold since 2008, the popularity of the Trelise Cooper eco bag continues to prove that New Zealanders are shopping in style and with a conscience.

The latest limited-edition jute bags from iconic fashion designer Trelise Cooper are now available in Countdown Woolworths and Foodtown stores nationwide, and are predicted to repeat the sell-out success of previous seasons.

Featuring two limited-edition designs and priced at $4.99, the designer bags are made from jute, a strong, natural plant fibre.

Countdown Supermarkets Managing Director, Dave Chambers, said the range is part of the company’s ongoing initiative to promote the usage of reusable bags and reduce the number of plastic bags used.

“One of the easiest changes you can make to ‘shop smarter’ is to bring a reusable shopping bag, thereby reducing the demand for plastic bags and cutting down the amount of rubbish in landfills,” Mr Chambers said.

He said that shoppers were increasingly aware of the environmental benefits of reusable bags, and with the help of designers, eco bags were becoming a fashion statement in their own right.

“We’re delighted that Trelise Cooper has come back on board for another season. Her bags are always incredibly popular. They are also particularly sturdy meaning our customers can reuse them time and time again,” he said.

Progressive launched its first re-usable green eco bags in December 2003, and in the last year alone, more than 190,000 green eco bags were purchased.

Trelise Cooper said her designs this year reflected her latest fashion collection, with nods to butterflies, ballerinas and pastoral scenes.

“When I was asked to design another range, I jumped at the opportunity,” she said. “I’m blown away by the continued popularity of the range, and I hope my designs can encourage people to bring them along every time they go shopping.”

40,000 of the bags went on sale yesterday and are available from all Countdown, Woolworths & Foodtown supermarkets nationwide.
