APO Gets its Teeth into Festival Favourite

--For Immediate Release--
APO Gets its Teeth into Festival Favourite

13/7/2011

Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra is used to playing to full houses, but playing for full movie theatres is a less regular occurrence.

A day before the NZ International Film Festival is set to open, the fastest selling movie in the programme is Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. The silent film, produced in 1922, is considered one of the great horror movies, and the point from which all vampire films spring.

In a special ‘Live Cinema’ performance for the festival, on Sunday 31 July the APO plays while Nosferatu screens at the Civic.

The music is written especially for the film by Timothy Brock, and the orchestra is conducted by frequent APO collaborator Marc Taddei.

There’s a tradition of collaboration between the APO and the festival, too, reaching back many years. In 2010 the orchestra played to the Buster Keaton movie Sherlock Jr, again conducted by Marc Taddei.

“This is something truly different for players and audiences alike,” says Barbara Glaser, Chief Executive of Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. “I know everyone in the orchestra always looks forward to these festival performances, and judging by the phenomenal ticket sales, it’s clear the public feels the same way.”
