Prospect: New Zealand Art Now--Wellington Exhibition

Prospect: New Zealand Art Now

26 November 2011–12 February 2012
City Gallery Wellington announces new summer exhibition

Prospect is a well-known and highly anticipated fixture in New Zealand’s contemporary art calendar. This summer, City Gallery Wellington will open its doors with the fourth in this series of exhibitions, Prospect: New Zealand Art Now (26 November 2011–12 February 2012).

2011’s Prospect marks the tenth anniversary of this series of exhibitions, inaugurated by City Gallery’s Director Paula Savage in 2001 as a regular opportunity for the Gallery to showcase important work by New Zealand artists and take the pulse of the national visual art scene.

The three preceding Prospect exhibitions have provoked, challenged and inspired visitors as well as introduced them to new art and original thinking—this year’s Prospect continues in this tradition.

Curator of this year’s show, Kate Montgomery, is excited about presenting the next chapter of Prospect’s history by bringing together a distilled selection of contemporary artists whose work responds perceptively to the pressures and social realities of our lives today.

“I feel privileged to be working with City Gallery and the artists on this exhibition,” comments Montgomery, “and now that a number of cyclic events and exhibitions exist in New Zealand to profile a wide range of contemporary artists and their work, it is a particularly interesting time for Prospect to re-define its scope.”

Taking over City Gallery’s main exhibition spaces, Prospect: New Zealand Art Now will include recent artworks as well as a number of new works produced specifically for the show. Contained within the line up are artists Eve Armstrong, Selina Foote, Ruth Buchanan, Robert Hood, Dane Mitchell, Kate Newby, Sriwhana Spong and John Ward Knox, amongst others.

Prospect: New Zealand Art Now will be accompanied by a series of public events taking place throughout the gallery over summer, including the chance to hear directly from a number of the artists involved in the exhibition.

City Gallery’s fortnightly e-newsletter will include regular updates about the show; this can be subscribed to via www.citygallery.org.nz.
