Smoothy goes big and crashes but maintains top
overall ranking
Fieberbrunn, Austria (10 March 2012) – New Zealanders continue to grace the podiums in this seasons Freeride World Tour, the most prestigious freeride tour in the world. This time it was the Kuzma twins turn, with each placing third. Skier Janina Kuzma stomped great air and snowboarder Maria Kuzma involved a cool spine at the top. Despite Sam Smoothy going a bit too big today and crashing, he still tops the overall ranking.
The Tyrolean village of Fieberbrunn, Austria hosted a faultless last stage of the Swatch Freeride World Tour before the finals in Verbier, Switzerland. With 20 cm of fresh cold snow on a solid base, the athletes were fired-up to give the mountain their best shot and attempt to secure a place in the finals. The event village on the mountain was filled to capacity with over 3400 lucky spectators, witnessing the riders delivering an awesome performance.
Maria dropped second into “a face full of powder.”
“I had a good run but unfortunately bum checked on my last cliff drop,” said Maria. “I was stoked to hear the judges say that they were really proud of the level of the girls snowboarding and skiing. Very stoked for Shannan Yates for the most amazing run I have ever seen a female snowboarder ride, and of course Liz (Kristoferitsch) for getting first place!”
