Wairoa Dialysis Society Scoops Top Award
Wairoa
Dialysis Society Inc. has won the Supreme Award at the
TrustPower Wairoa Community Awards.
The Awards were announced and presented on Tuesday 16 October at a function at the Wairoa Community Centre.
For winning the Supreme Award, Wairoa Dialysis Society Inc. received a framed certificate, a trophy and $1,500 prize money. Wairoa Dialysis Society Inc. now has the opportunity to represent the district at the 201 TrustPower National Community Awards, which are being held in the Far North District in March 2013.
In total, TrustPower has given away over $5,000 to various community groups through the night’s Awards.
TrustPower Community Relations Coordinator Suzi Luff says Wairoa Dialysis Society Inc. has risen up and provided a vital service for its community.
“The Wairoa Dialysis Society opened up its dialysis centre, Te Arahia, in 2010 to provide a local and central for patients to undergo dialysis treatment.
Since they fundraised for the initial set up and established the centre, a group of 10 volunteers are forever fundraising to cover costs of running the centre ($1,500 per month) and they also maintain the grounds and the centre too.
What this group has done is inspiring and shows huge compassion for the community. It’s allowing local dialysis patients and their families to no longer have their lives controlled by long drives to hospitals and lengthy periods on dialysis machines.
It’s given them a convenient place to undergo treatment and it’s enabling these people to self-manage their condition. And what’s special is that it’s all done here in Wairoa,” says Miss Luff.
Wairoa Dialysis Society Inc. also won the Health and Wellbeing category at the night’s awards.
Twenty two different groups were entered into this
year’s TrustPower Wairoa Community Awards, which is the
best result, equalling 2010’s
