Perry Newburn running for Koru Care NZ

Kiwi, Perry Newburn is running from New York City to Los Angeles in a bid to set a new Master’s record and, helping kiwi kids at the same time.

While running Newburn is raising funds for the New Zealand kids charity Koru Care New Zealand; who will soon be setting out on their annual trip to the States for a group of children with ongoing medical conditions and other challenges in their lives.

Perry who turned 60 in September, said, ”With turning 60 I wanted to do something in 2014 that would push me,” said Newburn. “After running around New Zealand, there wasn’t anything left of that magnitude here.

“But I followed Dean Karnazes when he ran across the U.S. and read Marshall Ulrich’s book of his record-breaking run, so this has been a dream of mine for a few years. Doing a little good along the way and inspiring a few would-be runners to become life-long runners will be an added bonus.”

With a current record of 52 days, Newburn’s attempt will see him have to average 58 miles per day in order to break the record for running the 2,800 miles.

Koru Care New Zealand, which has been helping kids for over 30 years will this year take 16 kids from throughout the country, the trip will cost $104,000 and funds raised by Newburn on his quest to beat the Master’s record will be a great help to make the trip possible.

Ann Bain, Koru Care’s Chairperson said “The support that Perry is helping us with is greatly appreciated, like many other organisations each year it is getting harder to gain the support we need to make the dream of a lifetime come true for the kids.
